Purpose:
This position involves testing electric circuits, motors, motor-generator sets, controls plus other components and equipment such as relays and automatic bus transfer switches for evaluation and performance.
Input Material
New equipment is tested during different stages of the manufacturing process. Evaluation testing is performed on customer owed equipment to determine what repairs are required or if replacement is necessary.
Essential Functions
Performs tests unique to each piece of equipment or circuit to obtain specific results. Tests include Diagnostic Tests, Hi-Pot (high voltage test), Insulation Test, Operational Tests, Noise Tests, Load Tests, Vibration Tests and many others. Adjust or replace components to meet test specifications. May use oscilloscope and spectrum analyzer for testing and/or analysis. Also involves meter and equipment calibration.
Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor.
Proficiency Levels
Level 1:
Setup - Operation - Maintenance - Has attained very high level of proficiency and requires very limited supervision. Generally has a minimum of 5 years experience. Can perform any test that the job requires - generally tests the most complex equipment - can follow test specifications as well as schematic wiring diagrams and troubleshoot printed circuit boards down to component level. Is extremely proficient at job related math and can make any necessary test calculations involving load, amperage, voltage and other test parameters. Is an expert at using test equipment, and can build, set up and hook up complex test platforms. Has excellent computer knowledge - beside word processing proficiency, can present test results in graphic format. Performs calibrations and routine maintenance on test equipment. Maintains good Customer Relations when customer/government reps are present to witness tests.
Quality/Continuous Improvement/Productivity - Inspects own work - uses experience and proven techniques to develop test procedures that are safer and produce better results in a shorter period of time. Keeps accurate logs of test results and completes required reports such as Inspection Discrepancy Reports and Government Source Inspections. Represents Test Department on Continuous Improvement Task Teams. Assists Supervisor - Test with establishing Certification Requirements for each test procedure. Assists new employees and other Testers with learning the skills necessary to obtain Certification. Works closely with Engineering on prototype work and makes meaningful suggestions for product improvement. Can fill in for Supervisor - Test.
Problem Solving - Can work out virtually any problem that arises concerning any test - has usually seen some form of the problem before.
Blueprints & Traveler - Can not only correctly interpret the tests, drawings and Traveler documents, but can assist other Testers.
Level 2:
Setup - Operation - Maintenance - Has attained a moderate to high level of proficiency and requires occasional supervision. Generally has a minimum of 3 years experience. Performs diagnostic tests to component level. Can perform most tests - works on components as well as assembled equipment. Can do routine math required by job. Has moderate computer knowledge sufficient to transmit test data. Can use all test equipment and can set up and hook up complex test platforms. Performs calibrations and routine maintenance on test equipment. Maintains good Customer Relations when customer/government reps are present to witness tests.
Quality/Continuous Improvement/Productivity - Inspects own work - assists in improving test procedures. Keeps accurate logs of test results and completes required reports. Works closely with Engineering on prototype work and makes meaningful suggestions for product improvement. Participates on Continuous Improvement Task Teams. Can fill in for Supervisor - Test.
Problem Solving - Can work out most of the problems that arise concerning work being performed - Utilizes the experience of the Level 1 Tester and the Supervisor - Test.
Blueprints & Traveler - Can correctly interpret the test requirements and Traveler documents, but may need some assistance when working on new, or very complex, jobs
Level 3:
Setup - Operation - Maintenance - Works at an acceptable to moderate level of proficiency and requires general supervision. Experience ranges from new hires and trainees up to 2 years and above. Usually performs tests on components and is learning more complex tests applicable to other equipment. Can do routine math required by job - has some computer knowledge. Is proficient at using test equipment required for component testing. Performs calibrations and routine maintenance on test equipment.
Quality/Continuous Improvement/Productivity - Inspects own work - assists in improving test procedures. Keeps accurate logs of test results and completes required reports. Puts serial numbers on components. Makes suggestions for product improvement. Participates on Continuous Improvement Task Teams.
Problem Solving - Can work out many of the test problems that arise. Utilizes the experience of the Level 1 and 2 Testers and the Supervisor - Test.
Blueprints & Traveler - Can correctly interpret the tests and Traveler documents most of the time, but usually needs assistance when working on new, or very complex, jobs.
Physical Requirements
Job requires standing - about half of the work can be done while seated. Since overhead cranes are available in all work areas, Testers are not required to lift more than 50 pounds.
Environmental / Safety Issues
Keeps work area clean and free of extraneous materials. Is particularly sensitive to safety rules and issues during testing and maintains a constant electrical awareness. Ensures that mechanical as well as electrical safety procedures are followed as stated on posted signs and in Company policy.
Cross Training
Cross trains on all of the positions in the Test Department as directed by the Supervisor - Test.
Training
This position is required to attend mandatory hearing training. Requirements for this position are to also be engaged in:
5S, Continuous Improvement, On-Time Delivery, Routine Total Preventative Maintenance and the submission of Improvement Ideas.
Education / Certification
High school graduate - will consider commensurate experience. Associate Degree preferred for Levels 1 and 2. Has passed Certification Test established by the Company for each test procedure that is used without close supervision.
Finished Product
Ensures that the equipment meets all required tests and that it is moved to the next position on the Traveler in a timely manner.
Accountability
Reports to Supervisor - Test. Ensures that the Supervisor - Test is informed of all progress and problems.

The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
